Tips & Guidance:
Indoor Sowing
Fill a tray evenly with seed compost, compacting gently with the base of another tray. Thoroughly water using a fine rose. Sprinkle seeds thinly across the surface, then cover them with 1cm of compost or vermiculite. Place the tray in a propagator set at 15-18°C, or alternatively, cover it with cling film and keep it in a warm room.
Cultivation
Once shoots emerge, remove the cling film. Ensure seedlings are positioned in a well-lit area but shielded from direct sunlight. When plants reach 5cm in height, transplant them either 5cm apart into trays of potting compost or individually into small pots. Continue growing them in an environment with a minimum temperature of 10°C.
Hardening Off/Transplanting
Gradually acclimatize the plants to outdoor conditions over 2-3 weeks before transplanting them 30cm apart, once the risk of frost has passed. Water thoroughly until they become established.
Outdoor Sowing
Sow seeds directly into pre-moistened soil at a depth of 2cm in their final flowering positions. Maintain soil moisture until seedlings emerge, and ensure thorough watering during dry spells. Thin out seedlings to approximately 30cm apart.
Special Considerations
Nasturtiums thrive in nutrient-deficient soils and do not require additional feeding. They can be effectively utilized in companion planting schemes to promote chemical-free cultivation.
